Kunsthalle Münster occupies a converted grain storage building in the harbor district and presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary artistic work. The venue houses multiple exhibition spaces that showcase different artistic approaches and perspectives.

The building originated as a storage facility in Münster's port and was converted into an art venue in the early 2000s. This repurposing expanded the city's capacity to present contemporary artistic work.

The venue took the name Kunsthalle Münster in 2012, having opened on 19 September 1991 as the Städtische Ausstellungshalle Am Hawerkamp under Gail B. Kirkpatrick. Each year it hosts the sponsorship prize exhibition of the Freunde der Kunstakademie Münster. Since 2020 it has been linked to Residence NRW⁺, a grant programme for artists and curators.

The Kunsthalle is on the fifth floor of Speicher II at Hafenweg in the city harbour; reach it by lift or stairs inside the converted warehouse. Exhibitions run in changing formats on about 800 m², each accompanied by a mediation programme, so allow time for guided formats as well as the rooms.

The venue intentionally maintains no permanent collection, instead focusing on responding to artistic developments and social discussions through changing exhibitions. This approach means each visit offers different discoveries and unexpected encounters.
