Escape of Novgorod, Steel roller coaster at Hansa Park, Sierksdorf, Germany
Escape of Novgorod is a steel roller coaster at Hansa Park in Sierksdorf, Germany, rising 40 meters (131 feet) and covering 700 meters (2,297 feet) of track. The ride passes through a Russian fortress and ends with a 97-degree drop that partly runs through the building.
The installation opened in April 2009 and tells the story of Peer Oldendorp searching for his father in 14th-century Novgorod. Construction of the fortress took several months and required detailed replicas of historical buildings.
The name comes from Russian history and refers to the medieval trading city of Novgorod. Riders pass through a reconstructed kremlin whose towers and walls recall the architecture of that era.
Four separate trains named Rurik, Vladimir, Wolkow, and Alexej operate on the track and reach speeds of 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in 1.4 seconds. The ride combines a vertical chain lift with a launch system and passes through several sections inside the fortress.
The installation is considered the steepest roller coaster with covered sections and reaches a descent angle of more than 90 degrees. The start combines both a vertical ascent and a launch system, a combination rarely found in roller coasters.
