Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Theatre company in Stadtmitte, Düsseldorf, Germany
The Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus is a theatre house in Stadtmitte with two main halls, including the Großes Haus seating 760 spectators and the Kleines Haus with 300 seats. The Central and Junges Schauspielhaus venues are located at other sites across the city.
The story begins in 1747 when the Gießhaus was transformed into a performance space under Elector Karl Theodor. The current building by architect Bernhard Pfau was constructed after World War II and completed in the 1970s.
The square in front of the building carries the name of Gustaf Gründgens, an actor and director who led the house from 1947 to 1955 and shaped its postwar recovery. Visitors today attend performances in German, ranging from contemporary plays to classical texts.
The building stands on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz next to the Dreischeibenhaus tower and is within walking distance from Königsallee and the main station. The entrance to the larger hall faces the square at the front.
The structure with its curved concrete forms appears in the Architecture section of the Windows 7 operating system background collection. Many users saw the building on their desktop without knowing it was a theatre in Düsseldorf.
