Orsoy, Medieval district in Rheinberg, Germany
Orsoy is a district on the left bank of the Lower Rhine in Rheinberg with remains of medieval fortifications, including a Powder Tower standing about 18 meters tall and a historic waterfront promenade. The area contains residential buildings of different periods arranged along streets that shape the character of the place.
The district received township rights in 1273 from the Count of Cleves, changing from a meadow into a fortified town with four gates. The fortifications were later constructed and altered using Italian and Dutch architectural styles.
The district displays buildings from its textile manufacturing era, with their architecture telling the story of industrial work from the 1700s. Walking through, you notice how these structures reflect the everyday life of people who worked in mills and factories.
A daily ferry service connects the district to Duisburg-Walsum across the river. The seasonal River Lady excursions allow visitors to explore other Rhine destinations.
The district contains preserved sections of fortress walls built during different periods in Italian and Dutch styles. These stylistic differences remain visible on the wall fragments and show how external influences changed over time.
