Schwarzwaldhochstraße, Scenic mountain road in Baden-Baden, Germany.
The Schwarzwaldhochstraße is a mountain road through the Black Forest that connects Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt, passing through elevations around 1164 meters. The route winds through densely forested hills with occasional clearings and viewpoints that open up wide views across the landscape.
Construction of the road began in the 1930s, with major sections completed after World War II. It was built to connect the previously isolated region with Baden-Baden and serve as an important transportation link.
The road passes through areas where traditional Black Forest houses with dark wooden facades line the route, and small inns serve regional dishes. Visitors encounter workshops and shops that keep local craftsmanship alive.
The elevated position provides access to nearby ski facilities in winter, while summer attracts cyclists and hikers. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially in the higher sections.
A major storm in December 1999 fundamentally altered the vegetation along the route and created new viewpoints with sight lines to the Rhine Valley and the Vosges Mountains. Visitors can clearly see this transformation in the landscape today.
