Burg Bodman, Medieval castle ruins in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, Germany.
Burg Bodman is a castle ruin on the Bodenwald ridge at roughly 627 meters elevation with views across Lake Überlingen and the surrounding landscape. The stone walls still show the structure of the medieval complex with its various building sections.
The origins of the current ruin date to the period between 1309 and 1332, when it was built as a replacement for an earlier castle. That earlier structure was destroyed by lightning in 1307 and killed several members of the Bodman family.
The site carries the name of the Bodman family, who ruled here for centuries and shaped the region. Visitors can still see traces of this noble family in the ruins and their importance to the area.
You can reach the ruin via hiking trails that start at Wassertürmle in Bodman or through an alternative route near Bisonstube Bodenwald where parking is available. The paths vary in difficulty depending on which route you choose.
A child named Johannes survived the 1307 disaster because his nurse threw him out of a window in a large kettle to save his life. This survival story reflects the dramatic moments that shaped the family's past.
