Burg Gerolstein, Medieval castle ruins in Gerolstein, Germany.
Burg Gerolstein is a medieval castle in the Eifel region featuring remains of residential buildings and fortification structures. Its most striking element is a substantial defensive wall that still conveys the scale of the original fortress and defines the layout of its sections.
The castle was founded around 1100 and soon came under control of the von Blankenheim family. A lightning strike in 1670 damaged the powder tower significantly and set the fortress on a path toward decline.
Two chapels within the castle show how faith shaped daily life for its residents in the 15th century. They reveal that religious practice was woven into the everyday routine of those who lived here.
The ruins are accessible year-round without admission fees, allowing you to explore both the outer fortification and main sections. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain is uneven and some paths can be steep.
Despite being attacked by French forces in 1691, surprisingly many structures survived and remain visible today. This makes the site a rare example of a fortress where the destruction itself is readable in what was left behind.
