Burg Hohengundelfingen, Medieval castle ruins in Gundelfingen, Germany.
Burg Hohengundelfingen stands on a limestone cliff about 725 meters above the Lautertal region with a solid tower whose walls measure about 8 meters wide. The ruins still display the characteristic rectangular shape and imposing structure of the medieval building.
The lords of Gundelfingen built the castle around 1180 as their main residence. It was destroyed about 1380 during a war between cities and remained abandoned afterward.
The castle serves as a local landmark and displays the architectural style of the Staufer period through its solid construction on the hilltop. Visitors can feel the power of this medieval structure as it shapes the valley today.
A marked path from the B465 parking area leads to the castle, with the walk taking about 15 minutes and involving minimal elevation gain. The easy access makes the visit possible for visitors of all fitness levels.
A free telescope at the tower top allows visitors to observe the Swabian Alps and distant Alpine mountains. This detail is often overlooked but gives visitors a surprising way to explore the surrounding landscape.
