Burg Granegg

Burg Granegg is a castle ruin situated on a 688 meter ridge in Wißgoldingen, featuring a circular bergfried as its main structure. The walls are approximately 2.50 meters thick and allow visitors to examine the fundamentals of medieval fortification techniques.

The castle was built around 1230 and remained inhabited until the 14th century. It likely stood under the control of the noble families Herren von Stoffeln or Herren vom Holtz.

The ruins display Buckelquader stones in their walls, showing how medieval builders used locally available materials for construction. This building style was common in the region and shaped the appearance of many castles in Württemberg.

The ruin sits at elevation with open access, but it is best visited in dry weather since the path is steep and can become slippery. Sturdy footwear and some physical fitness help make the climb easier.

The location on the ridge offered an excellent vantage point for observing the Christental pass and the trade routes that passed through this narrow passage. This made the stronghold an important checkpoint for regional traffic.
