Bürgergehorsam, Fortified tower in Osnabrück, Germany
The Bürgergehorsam stands with walls measuring 3.50 meters thick and features larger loopholes compared to other defensive structures in the city.
Built between 1517 and 1519, the tower received modifications in 1542 when its initial curved roof was replaced with a steeper lead-covered structure.
The name translates to 'Citizen Obedience', reflecting the relationship between local governance and community responsibilities in medieval German cities.
Visitors enter through the main entrance on the first floor, accessing the tower via an iron spiral staircase installed in 1977.
The tower served as a prison for citizens who opposed authority and later housed exhibitions of cultural artifacts from Eastern Germany until the 1990s.
