Osnabrück, Historic Hanseatic city in Lower Saxony, Germany.
This is a district capital in Lower Saxony, Germany, situated between the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehen Hills. The cityscape is marked by several churches with tall towers, narrow cobblestone lanes, and buildings from different centuries standing side by side.
The city was founded in the 8th century as a bishop's seat and developed during the Middle Ages into an important trading hub of the Hanseatic League. In 1648, negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia took place here, ending the Thirty Years' War.
Every Saturday morning, the Market Square transforms into a busy weekly market where locals shop for fresh vegetables and regional specialties. In the Old Town streets, people gather in the many cafés and beer gardens, which are especially well attended on summer evenings.
The historic center is best explored on foot, as most sights are located in the pedestrian zone and can be reached within twenty minutes. Many museums and public buildings are accessible and offer information in several languages.
This is the only major German city located within a UNESCO Geopark, the TERRA.vita, which extends into the urban center. Additionally, the Osnabrück Mint is one of the oldest still-producing mints in Germany and has been making coins for over a thousand years.
