Osnabrück Botanical Garden

Osnabrück Botanical Garden is situated on the grounds of two former limestone quarries and spans about 8 hectares. The space contains numerous plant species in outdoor beds and under glass, including tropical varieties housed in a large greenhouse.

The garden was established in 1984 and occupies land that previously served as a shell limestone quarry. This industrial past was transformed into an educational facility for Osnabrück University.

The garden serves as a meeting place for school groups and nature enthusiasts who come to learn about plants firsthand. Regular guided walks and workshops here demonstrate how botany connects to everyday life.

The garden is located in Westerberg and remains freely accessible to visitors at any time. Self-guided tours using GPS navigation help you explore the different areas at your own pace.

The garden houses the Loki Schmidt seed bank, which has collected and preserved wild plant species since 2003. This collection works with other institutions to safeguard rare plants for the future.
