Burse, Medieval university building in Tübingen, Germany

The Burse features pink half-timbered architecture with four floors and a half-hipped roof, standing elevated above the Neckar River in southern Tübingen.

Built between 1478 and 1482, the structure functioned as an educational facility for young scholars aged 14 to 16 studying basic university subjects.

Students learned seven liberal arts subjects including grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music before advancing to higher education.

Located at Bursagasse 1, the building currently houses the Philosophical Seminar and Art History Institute of the University of Tübingen since 1971.

From 1803 to 1805, the building served as Tübingen's first university hospital, where poet Friedrich Hölderlin received treatment for 231 days.
