Dammer Bergsee, Protected lake area in Damme, Germany.
Dammer Bergsee is a protected lake near the town of Damme in Lower Saxony that formed after mining operations. The lake is surrounded by forest and hills and features a circular walking trail with rest areas and viewing platforms.
The area was mined for iron ore starting in 1939, leaving behind large excavations. After mining ended, these pits naturally filled with water and formed the protected area we see today.
The visitor center at the shore offers guided tours where visitors learn about local wildlife, plant life, and the area's former mining past. People discover how nature has reclaimed this former industrial site.
The lake is accessible via a well-marked circular trail that is about 4 kilometers long and designed for walkers. Along the path you will find benches, shelters, and information boards to help you navigate.
The lake is not just a destination for nature lovers but shows how a place can be reborn through environmental restoration. Today it is home to rare bird and insect species that are typical of recovering damaged habitats.
