Dominican monastery of St Paul in Leipzig, Religious monastery in Leipzig, Germany
The Dominican monastery of St Paul features late-Gothic architecture with a star-net vault ceiling and contains a fifteenth-century altar retable in the chancel.
Founded in 1231, the monastery received consecration in 1240 by Archbishop Wilbrand from Magdeburg and later became part of the University of Leipzig in 1543.
The church held services directed by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1723 and 1725, establishing its position as a center for musical performances.
The monastery complex served multiple functions throughout its existence, from religious ceremonies to university activities until its demolition in 1968.
The monastery church contained numerous stone, wood, and metal epitaphs created between 1547 and 1770, marking it as a principal burial site in Leipzig.
