Eggberg basin, reservoir in Germany
The Eggberg basin is a large water reservoir located near Rickenbach above the Säckingen cavern power plant in Baden-Württemberg. Situated about 400 meters above the facility below, it holds approximately 2.2 million cubic meters of water that flows through a vertical pressure shaft to generate electricity.
The basin was constructed in 1966 as part of Germany's development of pumped storage technology for energy production. This engineering approach allowed the region to generate electricity efficiently by storing and releasing water according to daily energy demands.
The basin represents how communities integrate water management with their natural surroundings. Visitors walking along the edges can see how the local landscape has adapted to support energy production through this system.
Visitors can walk along pathways around the basin and enjoy views from the surrounding hillsides. Simple walking routes allow exploration along the water's edge, though access may vary depending on maintenance work and seasonal conditions.
Water drops vertically 400 meters through a pressure shaft into an underground power station below. This dramatic elevation difference enables remarkably efficient electricity generation from the water's natural descent.
