Elbebrücke Vockerode, Girder bridge over the Elbe River in Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, Germany.
Elbebrücke Vockerode is a road bridge crossing the Elbe River and connecting Oranienbaum-Wörlitz and Coswig across a distance of about 650 meters. The structure features eight spans and uses steel-composite construction to support traffic on the federal highway.
Construction began in the late 1990s as a replacement for a structure dating to 1938, and the bridge opened to traffic in 2000. Parts of the original foundation were retained during this reconstruction.
The bridge stands as an example of German engineering excellence, integrating modern structural design with functional transportation requirements in eastern Germany.
Drivers cross this bridge while traveling on Bundesautobahn 9 between Berlin and Leipzig, with three traffic lanes plus a shoulder lane in each direction. Crossing is usually straightforward, barring any traffic disruptions.
The bridge incorporates remnants of the older structure, with new steel components resting on a hybrid foundation that connects both time periods. This blend of past and present is visible in how the structure is anchored to the riverbed.
