Bubenstein Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Höllental valley, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Bubenstein Castle is a ruined fortress perched on a rocky outcrop at 560 meters elevation on the northern edge of Höllental valley. The remains consist of scattered stone fragments, wall pieces, and structural foundations spread across the site.
Walter of Falkenstein built the castle in the 13th century, and the lords of Staufen lived there from at least 1328 onward. The site remained inhabited and active until later medieval times.
The castle layout shows typical medieval defensive design that visitors can observe in the remaining walls and structures. You can walk among the stones and see how the construction once protected those who lived there.
The site is reached through Buchenbach village in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald area. The walk uphill to the ruins is steep, so wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time.
During the 1800s, workers removed large sections of the castle rock to make room for a railway line running through the valley. This extraction significantly changed the shape of the original site.
