Exzellenzhaus, former youth and cultural centre in Trier-Nord, Trier, Germany

The Exzellenzhaus in Trier-Nord is the surviving east wing of the former St. Marien monastery, most of which was demolished under Napoleon by 1807. The building later served as the seat of the Trier divisional commander, and its name derives from the honorific "Exzellenz" due to generals. Since 1972 it housed a self-administered youth and cultural centre, closed at the end of 2020.

The Exzellenzhaus began as part of the 7th-century St. Marien monastery. French troops expelled the monks in 1794, and the monastery was largely demolished under Napoleon by 1807, leaving only the east wing. After 1815 it housed the Trier divisional commander, whose title 'Exzellenz' gave the building its name. It served as a self-managed youth and cultural centre from 1972 until closure at the end of 2020.

The name comes from the Prussian era: the commander of the Trier division, if a lieutenant general or higher, was addressed as "Exzellenz", and the nickname became official. Until 2018 the house hosted the annual Summerblast Festival, a German metalcore, hardcore-punk and deathcore event. After the 2020 closure, the Kulturgraben e. V. emerged from the eXhaus bleibt! alliance to continue the youth and culture work.

The Exzellenzhaus stands in Trier-Nord, in the north of the city, and has been closed and fenced off since the city cleared it in early February 2019; the building is not open to visitors. The former children's day-care centre moved to the Ambrosius-Grundschule, and the Eintracht Trier fan project and staff offices were relocated to the former Geschwister-Scholl-Hauptschule. The planned fire-protection works included an outside staircase from the Balkensaal to the car park on the north side and a tunnel from the large Exil to the neighbouring Nordbad.

The name comes from the Prussian era: after 1815 the building housed the divisional commander, who bore the title "Exzellenz" if he was a lieutenant general or higher. The colloquial name eventually became official. The building has been closed since the end of 2020 due to structural defects.
