Evangelische Kirche Heiligkreuz, church
The Evangelische Kirche Heiligkreuz is a church in Weinheim built with simple stone walls and topped by a distinctive tower dating to the 15th century. The structure is expanded by a long nave added in the late 1700s, which extended the earlier choir section that originated in the 13th century.
The church is first documented in 1242 when the area was still called Atzmansweiler. The tower was constructed in the 15th century, while a major expansion of the nave occurred in the late 1700s to accommodate more worshippers in the growing community.
The church is named Heiligkreuz, referring to the Holy Cross and its religious significance to the community. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals attend services every two weeks and participate in musical events that bring people together.
The church is situated on Odenwaldstraße and is easily visible from the road. Services take place every two weeks, with the interior open to visitors afterwards. The small churchyard provides a peaceful spot to pause and enjoy views of the surrounding hills in the Odenwald region.
Three bells cast in 1958 hang in the bell tower and ring out across the village to mark hours and special occasions. The organ built in the 1970s sits within an 18th century wooden case, blending modern and historical elements within the church.
