Wiltinger Scharzhofberg, Vineyard location in Wiltingen, Germany.
Wiltinger Scharzhofberg is a vineyard location in Wiltingen on the Saar with south-facing slopes ranging from 190 to 310 meters in elevation. The site covers approximately 28 hectares and is divided into several parcels managed by different winemakers.
The site belonged to Saint Marien monastery from the year 700 until 1797, when Napoleonic wars led to its auction and transfer to private ownership. Since then it developed into a leading wine production area of the region.
The vineyard is known for producing Riesling wines that reflect the steep slopes and climate of the Saar valley. Visitors can taste these wines at local wine taverns and directly from winemakers, experiencing the place's role in the region's wine tradition.
The best conditions for a visit are in September and October when the harvest takes place and many winemakers offer tours and tastings. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the slopes are steep and paths can be uneven.
The soil contains about 70 percent gray and reddish slate, creating specific conditions for wine production. This slate composition gives the wines a distinctive mineral quality and crisp character.
