Dreikopf, Mountain summit in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Dreikopf is a roughly 502 m high hill of the Pellinger Hochflächen in the Hunsrück, between Lampaden, Paschel, Oberemmel and Pellingen. Its summit, now occupied by the Dreikopf wind farm, lies near the hamlet of Steinbachweier. The hill is made of slate typical of the Rhenish Massif, and the Olewiger Bach rises at its foot on the boundary between Pellingen and Lampaden.

The Dreikopf takes its name from a burial mound near Steinbachweier that dates to the La Tène period. In the early modern period the mountain was regarded, alongside the Hetzerather Heide, as a notable witches' dancing place; the Trier alderman Nicolaus Fiedler was tortured eight times in 1590/91 and executed because he was said to have been there for witchcraft. From 6 to 8 March 1945 the Battle of Lampaden was fought here: on Adolf Hitler's personal order, the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord" tried unsuccessfully to defeat the 94th US Infantry Division and was almost annihilated.

The name Dreikopf derives from a prehistoric burial mound near Steinbachweier, not from any three valleys. In the early modern period the mountain, alongside the Hetzerather Heide, was regarded as a notable witches' dancing place; the Trier alderman Nicolaus Fiedler was tortured eight times and executed in 1590/91 for allegedly attending such gatherings there. A chapel on the summit commemorates the fighting of March 1945.

Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit with varying levels of difficulty suited to different fitness levels. The paths are easily accessible from the surrounding region and offer good spots to stop and get oriented.

The summit's name comes from a burial mound near Steinbachweier, a hill grave dating to the La Tène period. Visitors walking the plateau can still find the slate typical of the Rhenish Massif, and the Olewiger Bach rises on the boundary between Pellingen and Lampaden at the foot of the mountain.
