Burgruine Sommerau

Burgruine Sommerau is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Ruwer River. The standing walls reveal the original structure and layout of this fortified residence from centuries past.

The castle was founded around 1200 by the noble von der Brücke family, who ruled from the Trier region. By the early 1300s, it had come under the control of the Archbishop of Trier, changing its role and importance.

The ruin shows how medieval noble families built their fortified homes with both defense and comfort in mind. Walking through the remains, you can see the choices they made about where to live and what to protect.

The site is reachable by hiking trails that wind through the surrounding landscape and are easy to follow. You can also see a waterfall created where rock was once cut away to direct water toward a historical mill.

The residential tower contains a well-preserved latrine opening supported by red sandstone brackets. This detail reveals how medieval castle dwellers solved everyday practical problems within their fortified homes.
