Kemmelkaserne, Military barracks in Trier, Germany
Kemmelkaserne is a military building complex in the Trier-Kürenz district that stretches along Sickingenstrasse, displaying standardized architectural elements from 1930s military construction. The site contains multiple buildings designed for various military functions, including barracks, administrative areas, and a former military hospital.
The complex was built between 1936 and 1937 during German military expansion. Following World War II, French forces took control of the site and remained there until 1999.
The complex takes its name from the Flemish village of Kemmel, which was destroyed during World War I. This naming choice reflects the region's connections to the broader European conflicts of that era.
The site is now open to the public and accommodates mixed uses including residential areas and a science park. Visitors should note that some buildings serve university functions and may have restricted access.
A section of the former military barracks was converted into Campus II of the University of Trier after 1999. This new university campus now houses departments including geography, computer science, and business studies.
