Sommerauer Wasserfall

Sommerauer Wasserfall, Wasserfall in Deutschland‎

The Sommerauer Wasserfall is a natural waterfall in the village of Sommerau that drops about 2 meters and flows over rocks to form a small cascade. The waterfall can be seen from a nearby bike path that runs through the area, allowing visitors to observe both the flowing water and the surrounding forested landscape.

The waterfall was created during the construction of nearby Sommerau Castle around 1303 when a meander in the Ruwer River was cut through, creating a deeper water channel. In the late 16th century, around 1572, a mill was built near the waterfall to harness the water power for grinding grain, serving the local community for centuries.

The waterfall takes its name from the village of Sommerau and has been a familiar place for local residents for many generations. People visit to connect with nature and listen to the flowing water, which creates a calming effect that draws visitors seeking quiet reflection.

The waterfall is easy to reach and lies near a well-maintained trail accessible from the village of Sommerau without requiring special footwear. The site is open year-round but is most pleasant in spring and early summer when water flow is strong, as winter weather can make paths slippery with ice and snow.

The waterfall in its present form was created around 1303 during castle construction when workers deliberately cut through a meander of the Ruwer River. This accidental origin makes it a place where human action and natural force come together in an unexpected way.
