Sperenberg Airfield, former military airbase in Brandenburg, Germany
Sperenberg Airfield is a former military base in Nuthe-Urstromtal near Am Mellensee. The sprawling site features long concrete runways, massive hangars, administrative buildings, and equipment dispersed across flat terrain, with structures showing age from decades of use.
Built in the late 1950s by East Germany with Soviet support, the airfield served as a major Soviet military base during the Cold War. Soviet forces withdrew in 1994, after which the site fell into disuse and gradual deterioration.
The site sits on flat, open ground and is accessible on foot, though sturdy footwear is advisable for walking the rough terrain. Some areas may be restricted or unsafe, and visitor facilities are minimal, so plan accordingly.
The location connects to an older military past through the adjacent Kummersdorf facility, where weapons testing occurred since the 1870s and rocket scientist Wernher von Braun worked on early liquid-fueled rockets in the 1930s. Those earlier experiments laid groundwork for the airfield's later Soviet-era operations.
