Kommandobunker Börfink, NATO command bunker in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
The Kommandobunker Börfink is a military fortification in the Hunsrück mountains with multiple underground levels built deep into the Ruppelstein hill. The facility was designed to allow air command operations and surveillance teams to work from below ground.
The facility opened in 1964 as a NATO command center and served during the Cold War to monitor European airspace. It closed in 1994 as military presence in the region was reduced.
The bunker was a place where German and American soldiers worked side by side on shared military tasks. The layout still shows today how different nations collaborated during the Cold War.
The visitor center and outdoor areas are accessible, though the underground bunker itself is not regularly open to tourists. Check ahead about current opening hours and tour availability for the above-ground structures.
The bunker could house up to 300 permanent staff who could live and work completely independently beneath the mountain. This underground self-sufficiency made the facility an autonomous stronghold that could have survived for weeks without external support.
