Oberreintalhütte, Alpine mountain hut in Wetterstein mountains, Germany
The Oberreintalhütte is a mountain refuge located in the Wetterstein range at roughly 1525 meters elevation and provides overnight accommodation along with meals for hikers and climbers. The building has sleeping areas for around 60 people arranged in basic shared dormitories.
The refuge was established in 1921 by the German Alpine Club as a base for mountaineers traveling in the Bavarian Alps. Over the decades, the hut has become a permanent stopover point for expeditions in this mountain region.
The hut serves as a social meeting point where hikers and climbers gather in the evenings to share their day's experiences with one another. These regular encounters create a sense of community among people who seek the mountains and embrace high-altitude travel.
To reach the hut, hikers walk roughly four and a half hours from the Olympia-Skistadion parking area in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with the route passing through the Partnachklamm gorge. The trail is well marked and accessible during the summer season from June through October.
The facility operates on a self-catering model where visitors bring ingredients from the valley and prepare their own meals together. This unconventional approach attracts people who enjoy cooking and eating communally rather than being served.
