Junge Theater Göttingen, Youth theatre in Göttingen, Germany.
Junge Theater Göttingen is a spoken-word theatre on Bürgerstraße 15 in central Göttingen, with several performance spaces of different sizes. A permanent company of professional actors runs the programme across the whole season.
The theatre was founded in 1957 by Hans-Gunther Klein, opening with a staging of Urfaust before a small audience. Over the following decades, it grew from a modest chamber venue into a house with a full ensemble and several stages.
The theatre focuses on younger audiences but also welcomes adults, often staging works that deal with themes from everyday life. After many performances, actors and spectators meet in the foyer for an open conversation.
Tickets can be bought online or at the box office, and booking ahead is a good idea since popular shows tend to sell out. The season runs from September to June, so it is worth checking the schedule when planning a visit.
In 1964, French singer Barbara performed her song about Göttingen for the first time on this stage, a song she had written after spending time in the city. The song is often cited as one of the most personal expressions of friendship between France and Germany.
