Kiessee in Göttingen

Kiessee is a recreational lake in Göttingen covering about 15 hectares with roughly 2.5 kilometers of shoreline. The area features green spaces, walking paths, and facilities for outdoor activities.

The lake began as a gravel quarry and gradually transformed into a nature reserve. Over time it was reshaped in different phases to become a landscape that balances natural protection with recreational use.

The southern part has a protected bird island where swans, geese, and migratory birds nest and breed. This spot lets visitors watch water birds living in their natural surroundings.

The area is easy to reach and offers different activities depending on the season and weather. During warmer months, visitors can rent boats and use designated spots for picnicking and grilling.

The lake connects to the Leine River and functions as flood protection for the city. This connection allows it to absorb excess water from the river during heavy rainfall.
