Rundfunksender Bonn-Venusberg, Radio transmitter in Venusberg, Bonn, Germany
The Rundfunksender Bonn-Venusberg is a radio transmitter mast in Bonn, standing 180 meters tall on a hilltop at roughly 165 meters above sea level. It broadcasts radio and television signals across the wider Bonn and Rhine-Sieg region.
A first broadcasting facility was built on the Venusberg in 1949, soon after the postwar reorganization of German radio. The current mast replaced it in 1985 to extend coverage across a larger area.
The Venusberg is a wooded hill south of Bonn that locals use for walks and outdoor activities. The mast rises clearly above the trees and acts as a familiar reference point for people moving through the area.
The mast is not open to the public but can be seen clearly from the walking paths that run through the Venusberg hill. A visit works well when combined with a walk through the surrounding woodland.
The mast is held in place by guy-wires fixed at 97 and 137 meters up, which help it resist wind without needing a heavy base. Because of this system, the mast has to be electrically insulated from the ground, which requires a special mounting solution.
