Hanskühnenburg, Mountain hut in Harz mountains, Germany.
Hanskühnenburg is a mountain hut in the Harz range, standing at around 811 meters elevation within the Harz National Park in the Göttingen district. It includes a wooden observation tower that rises above the treeline and gives a wide view over the forested hills around it.
The hut was built in 1889 by the Osterode section of the Harz Club as a wooden shelter with a tower. It soon became a regular stop for walkers and nature lovers from across the region.
The name of the hut refers to Hans Kühn, a local mountain guide who worked in this area during the 19th century. Information panels inside the hut tell his story and explain how his name became attached to this spot.
The hut is reached by marked hiking trails that start from several parking areas in the area. The paths run through forest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea regardless of the season.
A bronze plaque fixed to a rock near the hut marks the spot where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stood during his visit in 1784. He wrote about this area in his journals, making the site part of German literary history.
