Herzogenried-Siedlung

Herzogenried-Siedlung is a residential complex made of concrete buildings rising to about 13 stories, housing roughly 2000 apartments spread across a large area. The structures stand spaced apart within green surroundings, connected by pathways and park areas that define the living environment.

The settlement rose between 1974 and 1977 as a model housing project for the Federal Garden Exhibition of 1975 in Mannheim. It was created to showcase new approaches to urban living with green spaces integrated throughout.

The neighborhood draws residents from many backgrounds who meet in shared green spaces and community programs that reflect the area's diverse character. This mix of people shapes how the place feels and how its public areas are used throughout the day.

The area is car-free and offers easy direct access to the adjacent Herzogenriedpark for walking and cycling. Plan to spend time exploring on foot, as the pathways are generously laid out and worth wandering to discover the different zones.

The project resulted from a nationwide architecture competition won by four architects with groundbreaking ideas for modern living. Their design later influenced housing developments in several German cities beyond Mannheim.
