Rathaus Wesel, Gothic town hall in Wesel, Germany
Rathaus Wesel is a town hall featuring a reconstructed Flemish-Gothic facade with detailed stone carvings, fine ornamentation, and large windows. The structure displays a single unified architectural design with a side entrance rather than a central portal typical of comparable buildings in the Lower Rhine area.
The original building was constructed between 1455 and 1477 as a symbol of the town's prosperity and power. It was destroyed during World War II bombing and later rebuilt in 2011 with community support.
Statues of historical figures like Frederick William of Brandenburg and Charlemagne appear between the ground floor windows of the building. These sculptures reflect Wesel's role as an important city in the region and form part of what makes the town square feel connected to the past.
The building sits in the central market square of Wesel and is easily reached on foot as it stands at the heart of the old town. The surrounding area provides plenty of space to view the structure from different angles and examine its architectural features.
During the 2011 reconstruction, great care was taken to restore the original Flemish Gothic style as faithfully as possible despite losing many details during the war. The rebuilding became a remarkable example of civic unity, with residents, local government, and the state jointly funding the project.
