Hiddeser Bent, Protected raised bog in Teutoburg Forest, Germany.

Hiddeser Bent is a protected raised bog near Detmold with peat layers extending up to two meters deep in nutrient-poor sandy soil. A wooden walkway with an observation platform guides visitors through the bog and offers views across the entire landscape.

Peat extraction began in the 16th century and continued as a fuel source for local households until protective status was granted in 1925. This early conservation measure marked one of the first recognitions of moorland value in the region.

Visitors experience this place as evidence of early nature preservation ideals that took root in the 20th century. The protected area shows how people came to value and protect bog ecosystems instead of harvesting them.

The Hermannsweg trail and other hiking paths lead to this area, with drier months offering the most comfortable visit. Wooden boardwalks make access straightforward regardless of the season or time of day.

The bog supports fourteen different sphagnum moss species, including the carnivorous sundew plant that traps prey with sticky leaves. These specialized species thrive only in the nutrient-poor conditions of undisturbed bog.
