Kaispeicher A, Historic warehouse in HafenCity, Germany
Kaispeicher A is a red brick warehouse standing on the waterfront between Sandtorhafen and Grasbrookhafen, featuring multiple storage levels for goods. The building rests on approximately 1,100 concrete pillars driven into load-bearing sand layers to support its weight.
Architect Johannes Dalmann designed and completed the original building in 1875 as a tribute to Emperor Wilhelm I. It was later rebuilt in 1963 by Werner Kallmorgen after wartime damage.
The red brick structure with its large windows shapes the harbor's appearance and reflects a time when goods were constantly loaded and unloaded here. Visitors can see today how the building's design shows the importance this place held for Hamburg's trading activities.
The location sits directly in the HafenCity district and is easily reached from the street. The surroundings offer multiple paths along the water to view the building and harbor from different vantage points.
The original time ball on the roof dropped twice daily and served sailors as a time signal for harbor navigation. This mechanical time indicator was an important communication method for everyone working on the water.
