Staustufe Gundelsheim, Lock and barrage complex in Haßmersheim, Germany
The Gundelsheim barrage complex is a lock and weir facility on the Neckar River, featuring two lock chambers on the left bank and a hydroelectric power station on the right bank. The installation serves both electricity generation and river navigation along this section.
The right lock chamber, power plant, and bridge were built between 1935 and 1937, after the area came under specific security regulations. This construction period significantly shaped the facility as it exists today.
The former Neckar Mill from 1604 stands near the lock and now houses a restaurant where visitors can experience the place's heritage. The building recalls the era when the mill was powered by the river, before river regulation ended its original function.
The complex has a 520 meter (1,700 feet) boat ramp on the left bank of the Neckar, making it easy to launch or remove small vessels. Visitors can walk along paths on both banks to explore the facility and surrounding area.
The German Motor Yacht Association awarded this lock the title of most water sports-friendly lock facility in the country in 2012, highlighting its importance for boaters. This recognition shows the complex was designed with recreational vessels in mind.
