Kartausgarten

Kartausgarten is a park in Eisenach featuring sloped terrain with several water features and mature trees spread throughout the grounds. The landscape unfolds across multiple levels connected by pathways that create distinct garden sections.

The site was established in the 14th century when monks developed terraced areas for cultivation on the hillside. During the early 19th century, the grounds underwent redesign and evolved into a public garden space.

The garden transformed from a monastery garden to a botanical research center under Friedrich Gottlieb Dietrich between 1802 and 1840.

The park provides multiple entry points and is straightforward to explore, with paths of varying difficulty depending on slope. A children's playground sits in the northeast section, and a tea room offers refreshments within the grounds.

The gardener's house contains a tea room with original French wallpaper from the 1830s covering the walls. This offers a rare glimpse into interior decoration from the early 19th century.
