Karthaus Xanten, Carthusian monastery in Xanten, Germany
The former Carthusian monastery features traditional religious architecture with simple geometric forms and stands near the historic center of Xanten.
Founded in 1417 near Wesel and relocated to Xanten in 1628, the monastery maintained its religious function until Napoleon ordered its closure in 1802.
The monastery buildings represent the architectural principles of the Carthusian order, emphasizing functionality and minimal decoration in their construction methods.
The upper floors currently house the municipal library, while the ground level contains a restaurant serving local specialties to visitors.
The monastery complex underwent a transformation from a religious institution to a modern public facility while preserving its original structural elements.
