Kloster Fürstenberg, Medieval monastery near Xanten, Germany
Kloster Fürstenberg is a former Benedictine and later Cistercian nunnery near Xanten with a chapel structure that remains visible today. The site sits on elevated ground overlooking the Rhine valley landscape.
The monastery was founded in 1116 as a Benedictine community and switched to the Cistercian order in 1259. After destruction during warfare in the 16th century, it was not rebuilt.
The monastery was a place where women received education and held authority for centuries, which was unusual for that time. The nuns shaped the region through their work and influence on the surrounding communities.
The chapel remains lie along marked walking trails in open countryside that are easy to reach. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as the paths cross rural terrain.
The nuns were forced to flee to another convent during a raid in the 16th-century conflict. This sudden expulsion ended the religious life at the original site permanently.
