Kalmithaus, Mountain hut on Kalmit summit in Südliche Weinstraße, Germany
Kalmithaus sits atop Kalmit mountain at about 673 meters elevation in the Südliche Weinstraße region. The shelter features indoor seating areas and a terrace where visitors can enjoy views overlooking the Upper Rhine Plain.
The original structure was built in 1882 by a conservation group to shelter hikers in the mountains. After a gas explosion in 1981, the building was reconstructed from the ground up in 1983.
The shelter serves as a gathering point where hikers meet, share meals, and take in the views together. It reflects the regional tradition of bringing people together in natural settings for rest and refreshment.
Hikers reach the shelter by following forest paths from a parking area northwest of the summit. The grounds offer comfortable seating both indoors and outdoors for visitors to rest and eat.
The shelter houses a weather station and radio relay equipment while accommodating hundreds of visitors at once. These technical installations make it serve purposes beyond simple rest and food.
