Langemarckhalle, Military memorial in Westend, Germany
The Langemarckhalle sits beneath the Bell Tower of the Olympic Stadium complex, featuring stone columns and memorial elements throughout its interior. The hall forms part of this larger sports facility and connects to surrounding structures and open grounds.
Construction took place in 1930 as part of the Olympic complex and the building served as a memorial from its beginning. Its design and purpose shifted through different periods, reflecting Germany's changing circumstances and priorities over the decades.
The hall functioned as a space for exhibitions documenting the history of the Reichssportfeld area and how it changed through different periods. Today it serves as a place where people engage with and reflect on this complicated past.
The site is accessible by the U2 subway line, which stops at Olympiastadion station. From there, you can walk through the Olympic Park grounds to reach the hall.
Next to the hall lies the Maifeld, a large open field that once hosted events drawing tens of thousands of visitors. Together, these two spaces form a place where visitors encounter the architectural legacy of the early twentieth century.
