Leuchtturm Kiel, Maritime navigation tower in Bay of Kiel, Germany.
Leuchtturm Kiel is a white cylindrical tower located at the entrance to Kiel Fjord, rising 33.5 meters (about 110 feet) above the water. It stands in open water and is visible from both shores of the fjord as well as from passing vessels.
The lighthouse entered service in 1967, at a time when traffic through Kiel Fjord was growing and better navigation aids were needed. It replaced earlier systems that could no longer keep up with the volume of ships using these Baltic waters.
The lighthouse stands at a spot where large cargo ships, ferries, and sailing boats all pass close together, making it easy to feel how busy this stretch of water really is. Watching vessels navigate around it gives a clear sense of how central the sea is to everyday life here.
The tower is not open to the public, but it can be seen clearly from the waterfront promenade or from a ferry crossing the fjord. Clear days offer the best view, especially in the morning when the light hits the white tower directly.
Each year the tower serves as the finish line for an open-water swimming race that draws hundreds of participants who swim toward it across the fjord. The event has become a regular fixture in the local sports calendar.
