Lützendorf-Kaserne, Military barracks in Weimar, Germany.
Lützendorf-Kaserne is a military barracks located in northern Weimar consisting of multiple buildings arranged parallel to the slope of Ettersberg hill along Lützendorfer Street. The grounds were divided into two sections, with army units housed on the western side and air force units on the eastern side of Ettersburger Street.
The barracks were constructed in the 1930s during Germany's military expansion. The site previously held the medieval village of Lützendorf, which was destroyed in 1451.
Writer Wolfgang Borchert was stationed here in 1941 as part of the Tank Communications Replacement Battalion 81. His time at the barracks connects this place to 20th-century German literary history.
The grounds are easily accessible and the buildings are visible from outside, though not all areas are open to the public. The best time to visit is spring through autumn when weather is mild and the surrounding area is green.
After World War II, control of the barracks shifted from the United States Army to Soviet forces of the 8th Guards Army. This transition made the barracks a key point in Germany's division during the Cold War.
