Oder-Havel-Radweg, Radwanderweg in Brandenburg
The Oder-Havel-Radweg is a 64-kilometer bike path in Brandenburg that connects the Oder and Havel rivers. The route passes through forests and alongside lakes, partly following the historic Finow Canal, with most sections paved and flat for easy riding.
The path uses sections of old towpaths where boats were once pulled by hand along the Finow Canal, which dates back over 400 years. It connects towns with industrial heritage, particularly Eberswalde, where former factory buildings recall past craftsmanship traditions.
The route passes through small towns where daily life centers around the waterways and their history. Locals have used these canals and locks for centuries, and this relationship with the water remains visible in how communities are organized.
The route starts in Liebenwalde and ends in Hohensaaten, easily accessible by public transport from Eberswalde. Flat terrain and paved sections make it suitable for both beginners and experienced cyclists alike.
The path passes remarkable lift locks, especially the Niederfinow ship lift, a large structure that moves boats between different water levels. This visible engineering achievement shows how locals reshaped the land to enable water transport.
