Regenbogenbrücke, Pedestrian bridge in Dorstfeld district, Dortmund, Germany.
The Regenbogenbrücke is a steel footbridge that crosses the A40 motorway, connecting the Technical University of Dortmund with the DASA exhibition. Built in 2008, it serves pedestrians and cyclists as a direct route between educational institutions and residential areas.
An original bridge with rainbow illumination was built in 1987 and entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1990 as the first of its kind. The current structure, completed in 2008, replaced the original while continuing its innovative lighting concept.
The bridge takes its name from the LED lights integrated into the handrails, which display rainbow colors visible from both sides of the motorway. Visitors notice how the colored lights bring the structure to life at night and make it a recognizable landmark in the area.
The bridge provides straightforward access for pedestrians and cyclists, with a level surface and good views of the surroundings from both sides. As a popular route, it can get crowded during peak times, especially when events happen on campus.
The LED lights display seven distinct colors that reflect differently depending on weather conditions and are especially visible at night. This visual feature makes it a recognizable landmark throughout the Dorstfeld neighborhood.
