Westpark, Public park in western Dortmund, Germany.
Westpark is a public green space in western Dortmund, close to the city center, with two large playgrounds, barbecue areas, and a dedicated dog section. It connects the surrounding neighborhoods of Innenstadt-West, Unionviertel, and Klinikviertel through a network of walkable paths.
The site was established in 1811 as a cemetery called Westentotenhof, just outside the city walls of the time. When a new main cemetery opened in 1912, the land was gradually turned into the park it is today.
The Westparkfest takes place every May and draws many Dortmund residents together for live music, food stalls, and a large secondhand market from across the Ruhr area. It is one of the most attended summer events in this part of the city.
The park has several entrances and is easy to reach on foot from all the surrounding neighborhoods. The paths are flat and well-kept, making a full walk through the area straightforward at any time of day.
Near the northeastern entrance of the park stands a memorial marking the location of a Jewish cemetery that existed here from 1815 until the 1940s. The memorial is easy to walk past without noticing, but it marks a part of local history that is not documented elsewhere in the park.
