Dortmund U-Tower, Industrial monument in Union District, Dortmund, Germany.
The Dortmund U-Tower stands as a former fermentation and storage building of Union Brewery in the Union District and reaches a height of 70 meters (230 feet). The golden U on top lights up at night and is visible from many spots in the city center.
The brewery commissioned the building in 1926 as the first high-rise complex in the city. After beer production ended in 1994, the facility was renovated and reopened as a cultural center in 2010.
The name refers to the Union Brewery that produced beer here until 1994 and used the golden U as its brand symbol. Today art lovers visit the exhibitions and enjoy the view from the roof over the city.
The building opens Tuesday through Sunday, with longer evening hours on Thursdays and Fridays. Access is through the main entrance on Leonie-Reygers-Terrasse in the Union District.
Forty concrete pillars support the nine floors that once stored one million hectoliters of beer. Today the spaces house art exhibitions and studios while the architecture preserves the industrial origin.
