Rügen Radio, Radio transmitter in Glowe, Germany.
Rügen Radio is a former coastal radio station on the island of Rügen, made up of a transmission site in Lohme and a reception facility in Glowe. The two sites worked as a single system and include technical buildings and antenna structures along the northern coast of the island.
The station was founded in 1911 as a coastal radio post and moved to its current location between 1930 and 1932 to improve coverage over the Baltic Sea. During World War II, it was brought into the naval military communications network.
For decades, the station was a lifeline for sailors and fishermen working across the Baltic Sea, letting them stay in touch with the shore. The call sign DHS, later changed to Y5M, was familiar to crews throughout the region.
The grounds are on the northern coast of Rügen Island and can be reached from the landward side of the island. Since the facility is no longer in operation, it is worth checking access conditions before visiting.
The station could reach ships far beyond the Baltic Sea and at times maintained contact as far as the North Atlantic. This range was unusual for a coastal radio post of its era.
