Schellschlicht, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany
Schellschlicht is a mountain in Bavaria reaching approximately 2050 meters in height, characterized by two distinct ridges that shape its profile. A natural depression on the southern side contains several small streams that eventually merge into a larger creek.
During the 19th century, hiking routes across the mountain were established and marked by Alpine associations. These early pathways opened the region for exploration by walkers from across Bavaria.
The mountain is part of a protected nature reserve where rare alpine plants grow and hikers can experience the landscape at their own pace. The quiet atmosphere here contrasts sharply with the busier peaks nearby, giving visitors a sense of solitude and connection to the natural surroundings.
The hike starts from Griesen village and follows a route of about 12 kilometers to reach the summit. Plan for approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking time depending on your fitness level and pace.
Multiple small creeks in the southern bowl converge to form the Schellaine, a stream that has carved deep limestone canyons into the mountainside. These carved passages are visible from the summit and demonstrate how water shapes the landscape over millennia.
